The community is urged to do their part for National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July by nominating a plant of significance to Cardinia Shire’s new Significant Tree Register.

Council established the database to protect cherished and valuable trees from the threat of looming developments and de-vegetation.

Under the scheme, those deemed worthy will be protected through the Cardinia Planning Scheme.

Mayor Colin Ross has implored residents to add to the growing register.

“Nominating a tree for the Significant Tree Register is easy to do online, and will help us to better protect our local trees of significance for the benefit of our environment and the enjoyment of our community,” he said.

A number of factors assessed to determine the significance of a tree include its horticultural value, rarity, age, size, aesthetic value, having a curious growth form or being of cultural worth.

Kooweerup’s Country Women’s Authority organised a National Tree Day activity on Sunday at Drain Road to help the cause.

Contributions can be made to the register online at Cardinia Shire’s website before 18 September.
