GARFIELD GOLF

Perfect weather – once again this week – except for Saturday when strong gusting south westerly breezes were in play.

Thursday’s golfers got the best of the conditions with four golfers turning in exceptional performances.

Bob Calderara took out the A Grade event with a very nice round of 73 off the stick which was matched by Gary Bassett – and Darren Mouser went the one stroke better with a 72 off the stick to finish runner up after handicaps to Calderara.

And Trevor Male bounced back to some nice form with a score of 41 points.

All four gents are low markers adding merit to their efforts.

Naturally enough they filled the top-four positions for the A Grade event.

The B Grade event was a three-way count back decision between Peter Fedorenko, Keith Edwards and Bruce Styles whom all came in with a round of 37 points…Fedorenko got the decision.

David Thorp broke a long run of outs to win the C Grade event, also by a count back over Lou Artico with a round of 38 points.

A final score of 36 points or better was required to get a ball down the line.

A big field of 115 turned out for Saturday’s game of single stableford where Dean Shannon reigned supreme by winning the B Grade event with a score of 42 points defeating Fedorenko – who had a good week – by four points.

Craig Hunter won the A Grade event with a nice round of 40 points to defeat an inform Harry Thomas by two points.

Daryl Sheehan took out the C Grade event with a handicap score of 36 points to defeat Ben Balfour by a single point, whilst Stephen Ferran got the D Grade decision with a score of 39 points to defeat Tony Quinn by two points.

A final score of 34 points or better was good enough to get a ball down the line.

The Graeme Ovens Match Play quarter finals were played on Saturday with two of the matches being walk-over results whilst Steve Kohut defeated Jackson Wade on the 19TH hole and Matt Skinner had a comfortable 3/2 win over Liam Toole.

The semi-finals are scheduled for play on 19 March whilst the 36-hole final is to be played on 23 April.

My tip (Tony Webster) is for Shane Male to meet Matt Skinner for the title.

Dek Bell won Monday’s stableford event with a score of 40 points to defeat Cyril Peake by one point. This Saturday is the Top-Town Team event via a shot-gun start.

Also, this week on Friday is the Veterans (55 years and older) Four-Ball Aggregate event which is a shot-gun start at 9am at a cost of $30 per person which also includes lunch.
