Detectives have made a breakthrough in their investigation into a callous hit/run which killed a much-loved Pakenham grandfather.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have identified a vehicle they had been searching for in relation to the fatal hit/run on Kooweerup Road in Pakenham South on 9 February.

The driver of a white Toyota HiLux, a 50-year-old Lang Lang man, has been questioned by police and is assisting with their inquiries.

Last week, Victoria Police released CCTV and images of a car, who they believe was in the area at the time, and appealed for the driver to come forward.

Police are also still searching for a yet to be identified vehicle which failed to stop at the scene after allegedly hitting 60-year-old Pakenham man Don, who was riding his vespa at the time.

Don, an avid darts player, was travelling towards Kooweerup to play darts when one vehicle, which police have dubbed vehicle B, overtook his scooter and another car, dubbed vehicle A.

At the same time car B was overtaking, it’s believed car A allegedly attempted to overtake the scooter but swerved back in and struck the back of the scooter causing it to crash, police say.

An unresponsive Don was located at the intersection of Healesville-Kooweerup and Ballarto Road just before 7pm.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly later died, police revealed on 17 February.

Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Amos called on the offending drivers to immediately come forward.

“Everybody has a story to tell. Their account is absolutely critical for us and we want to hear it,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has dashcam footage or other information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
