A garbage truck has caught fire during a routine rubbish collection in Pakenham.

Residents in Fallingwater Estate reportedly woke to the smell of smoke and the sound of sirens on Friday 15 November, just before 7am.

A CFA spokeswoman confirmed crews from Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon responded to a garbage truck fire in a residential estate.

The fire was under control by 7.20am and was completely extinguished by 8am.

At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown.

“It’s believed the truck was collecting hard rubbish when it has picked up something which caused the fire,” a Pakenham Fire Brigade spokesman said.

It’s understood the quick thinking driver reportedly offloaded the contents of the truck and drove into a park to avoid the possibility of the fire burning to nearby properties.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
