A group of entrepreneurs from Pakenham which seek to provide positive narrative of South Sudanese/African Australians has been recognised for their work in the Seven News young achiever awards.

The group were presented with ‘The Victorian Government Group Achievement in the Community Award’ in front of 580 people on Friday 10 May at Flemington Racecourse.

The Entrepreneurs Movement Club (EMC) of Pakenham is a youth led organisation which was established by seven South Sudanese Australians.

The aim of the club is to connect South Sudanese young people to the community by linking opportunities to support their further education and employment pathways.

Since 2015, the club has engaged over 2000 young people through a range of initiatives including the Multicultural Youth Employment Forum, Inaugural African Diaspora Summit, workshops, soccer tournaments and a homework club.

The organisation encourages participation in education and employment by linking opportunities such as apprenticeships and personal development workshops which aims to provide positive portrayal amidst negative media portrayal.

EMC was one of three groups nominated. They eventually beat Flourish Programs of Sandringham and Mitchell Shire Youth Council to take home the award.
