As Casey-Cardinia Libraries head Chris Buckingham prepares to embark on another CEO Sleepout for Vinnies, he has confessed that he struggled to enlist himself this year.

Mr Buckingham said he felt like homelessness in the community would never be resolved, and that his participation would be futile.

But when he got out of his warm bed one morning, he realised he had to take a stand.

Held on 21 June, the fundraiser is attended by around 200 Victorian CEOs and community leaders who agree to sleep outdoors with nothing more than a piece of cardboard and a sleeping bag.

The objective is to raise funds and awareness.

Mr Buckingham aims to raise $5000 prior to the sleepout, and has pledged to personally match every dollar donated to his campaign – up to a value of $2,500.

“We know that homeless people use our libraries as a safe place where they can access information and get support,” he said.

“Homelessness in the Casey Cardinia region is often caused by family violence and financial distress – and sometimes just a stroke of misfortune.

“I am pleased to be able to pay it forward and do my bit to help people in need.”

He has already raised more than $2,600 – the equivalent of eight individual support programs, 22 beds and 88 meals.

The community is encouraged to pitch in by sponsoring a participant or by making a donation directly to Vinnies.
