THE Pakenham community is rallying behind the family of a “selfless, compassionate” father-of-three who lost his life in a motorbike accident earlier this year.
Brad Buckland, 30, was tragically killed when his bike collided with a four wheel drive in February – devastating his wife Sarah and their three young children.
One of Mr Buckland’s closest friends, Glen Jones, has created The Buckland Charity Night fundraiser to support the grieving family and pay respects to a “good-hearted bloke.”
“He was the type of guy who would be on his feet at 3am if you’ve broken down somewhere – ready to drive an hour to help you out,” he said.
“Everyone who knew him thought he was selfless.
“The least we can do is ease the burden for Sarah and the kids while she’s away from work.”
Ms Buckland said she was humbled by the wave of support.”The community and all of Brad’s friends have just been absolutely amazing,” she said.
“The kids aren’t doing too well so I want to support them the best I can.
“Donations from this fundraiser will be put into a trust fund for them when they turn 18, so they can live comfortably.” Their close friendship blossomed in the early 2000s when they started an apprenticeship together at Cummins.
“We went out with the caravans a few times and it just grew from there,” Mr Jones said.
The traumatic circumstances surrounding the 30-year-old’s death were exacerbated when the first paramedic arrived on scene – Mr Buckland’s cousin.
“His cousin performed CPR on him, trying to keep him with us,” Mr Jones added.
Mr Buckland was well known throughout the Cardinia community, particularly in the trucking industry.
According to Mr Jones, more than 600 people attended the 30-year-old’s memorial service in February, proving just how popular he was.
The event at the Pakenham Racecourse Event Centre, scheduled for 25 May, will feature a performance from comedian-hypnotist Bizarre Gazzard, live entertainment, auctions and a two course meal.
Tickets are $80 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.com.au.
