It’s that ‘talent time’ of year

GARFIELD GOLF

NOW that the cold winter winds have arrived it’s evident that winning scores are dependent on the skill of the golfer rather than how far the ball runs.
This week the first round of the annual 4BBB Par Championship was played and predictions of a score of plus ten were just about spot on. Whilst many members were away at Foster playing that annual plate, 32 pairs teed up trying not to play themselves out of contention – the norm for a two-round event. Steve Kohut and Peter Medwin did best shooting a score of plus nine for their round with their only bad hole, surprisingly, being the short par-four second of which Steve has previously scored an eagle two. Nineteen pairs were within two shots of plus nine which will ensure a very competitive event this week before the top-eight pairs play off in the quarter finals the following week.
Gary Scholes and Rod McGlone finished their round off in brilliant fashion by scoring wins for the last four holes to finish on plus eight. However it was Grant McKay and Brian Tindall whom finished runner-up on a count-back by also scoring plus eight. Using the time-honoured starter’s discretion Brian and Grant teed off from the sixth hole with the merits of their decision back firing badly as finishing on the easier par-three fourth and the par-four fifth holes, rather than the testing 17th and 18th holes seemed to make sense in the testing conditions. Their back nine score of plus-seven would realistically ensure a high number to finish. However it was not to be as they finished minus-one for their final two holes.
Other good scores of plus-eight were scored by Trevor Franklin and Harry Huyskens as well as Glenn Whelan and Don Smith. All teams finished on the positive side of even par except John Dineen and Richard Gould who finished on minus one.
Thursday’s event was highlighted by the return to the winners list by Neil Watson to break a very long run of outs by taking out Division 2 with a score of 39 points playing off his handicap of 25. Charlie Hardy did best with 38 points to win First Division. Balls were awarded to all those players scoring 33 points or better. Peter Johnson topped of a consistent two weeks by winning the money for the secret nine holes.
