Yard down in mixed market

There were approximately 470 export and 700 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 80 head week on week at VLE Pakenham.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a mixed market, dearer in places.
There were fewer vealers penned and quality was good as the steers held firm while the heifers eased two cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers and heifers were in greater numbers and quality was very mixed with a good supply of secondary calves suited to feed or restock as demand from lot feeders lifted a little.
Yearling trade steers lifted two cents for most while those to lot feeders sold one cent to six cents per kilogram dearer.
Medium weight yearling heifers suited to the trade held firm while the heavy weights over 400 kilograms improved nine cents per kilogram.
A more limited but better quality run of grown steers and bullocks improved five cents for most and up to 11 cents per kilogram in places.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish gained seven cents per kilogram.
Most vealers sold from 177 cents to 220 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 185 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold mostly between 152 cents and 188 cents after a top of 202 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers made from 165 cents to 192 cents with the heifer portion from 153 cents to 182 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 172 cents to 193 cents per kilogram. Bullocks made between 177 cents and 199 cents per kilogram. Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish sold between 162 cents and 187 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers sold at similar prices making from 158 cents to 177 cents per kilogram.
