Smaller numbers and good quality sees prices rise

Improved demand at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw prices increase last week for both the Wednesday Fat Sale and the Thursday Bull and Cow Sale. Wednesday’s Fat Sale yarded 100 less head, and the yard average was 10 cents better than the previous week, coming in at 178.2 cents per kilogram.
The yarding was quoted as good to very good quality by agents and buyers.
Weights were similar to the previous sale across all categories.
Seventy four bullocks reached 192 cents, up seven cents, and averaged 170.8 cents, up nine cents; 46 heifers reached 189.6 cents, up 13 cents, and averaged 165.8 cents, up nine cents; 60 steers reached 200 cents, up 18 cents, and averaged 173.6 cents, up 16 cents and 217 vealers reached 228.6 cents, up three cents, and averaged 188.1 cents, up 11 cents.
Demand for bulls rose again on Thursday with the top selling to 234.2 cents.
There were 37 bulls yarded and the average was up 21 cents to 192.6 cents.
Good gains were made with 361 cows making to 165 cents, up 15 cents, and averaged 15 cents better at 139.5 cents with a yard average of 146.3 cents, 12 cents up on the previous sale.
The Monday Calf Market contained less numbers with 169 head penned.
Friesian heifers made to $910, beef calves reached $170, and bull calves made to $70.
