Two thousand people attended Kooweerup’s Carols by Candlelight on Saturday 11 December, enjoying a firework display and stellar musical entertainment.

Presented by the Lions Club of Kooweerup, chairman of the carols committee Ron Payne said everyone was thrilled with how the night went.

“We are very happy with the turnout, but not just the number of people but the enthusiasm shown by everyone,“ Ron said.

“We had so many people said thank you on their way out.

“It’s a satisfying program to run.“

The Lions Club forked out almost $2000 for temporary staging and are hoping to offset the costs at fundraisers in the coming years.

The night was hosted by regular compere Peter Bottomley, who this year was joined by actor and past Kooweerup Secondary College student Jessica Redmayne.

Ron said the event was a real team effort with local community groups, having undertaken meetings since February to organise.

The Kooweerup Men’s Shed made the sleigh for Santa, Turningpoint church catered and did the car park marshalling, the 1st Kooweerup Scout Group did security and fencing and other Lions Club Members assisted everywhere else.

Kooweerup Secondary College’s senior band was the main entertainment for the evening.

It doubled as musical director Claudia Barker’s final performance with the college.

She was presented a ceremonial wall clock from the Lions Club on behalf of the community.

“It’s a clock because we wanted to show our appreciation for all the time and many hours she has spent in support of the community,“ Ron explained.
