New teams fill the greens

KOOWEERUP BOWLS

ANOTHER successful Jason Giaccotto Memorial day was held on the 11 April with 16 teams participating.
Despite a number of regular teams unable to play this year for various reasons, a number of new teams, helped manage fill the Green. Clubs who entered teams this year were from Kooweerup, Lang Lang, Cardinia Waters, Berwick, Hoppers Crossing, Cranbourne RSL, Korumburra, Corinella, Dandenong City and City of Frankston. The day has been sponsored by Arthur and Shirley Giaccotto for many years in memory of their son Jason who was tragically killed in a car accident. Jason and Arthur began their bowls careers at Kooweerup before transferring to Pakenham and when Arthur transferred back to Kooweerup he requested that the club conduct future memorial days. The Club would like to thank all members who worked extremely hard on the day to make it a success and thank the many sponsors who donated raffle prizes.
Winners on the day, and for the second consecutive year with three wins and 35 shots up were Kim McMahon, Max Calder, Ray Brown and Lindsay Wealands (Kooweerup). The runner-up rink with three wins and 26 shots up consisted of Arthur Giaccotto, Brad King, Bob Mason and Kon Kormas (Kooweerup). Third place went to Patrick Steere, Albert Bertoncello, Rod Beevors and Tom Cantwell (Berwick) with three wins and 20 shots up.
The final day of the Summer Friday Triples competition was played with the winning rink of George Crynes (Kooweerup), Jim Smith (Cardinia Water) and Irene Stanbridge (Kooweerup) gaining 39 points. Runners-up on the day with 37 points were Noel Speight, Margaret Scullin and Julie Walker (Kooweerup). Best last game was won by Albert Slefendorfas, Wendy Pownall and Betty King (Kooweerup) with 18 points and 13 shots up.
In season aggregate results; in third place with 15 wins, two draws and 149 ends were Pauline Gray, Mary Masters and Lindsay Wealands (Kooweerup). John Van Vugt, Graeme Wilde and Simon Koning (Cardinia Waters) finished in second place with 16 wins, one draw and 154 ends. And the winning team for the season with 17 wins and 160 ends was Ken Taylor, Edna Adams and Fred Forde (Warragul).

Winter competition commences Friday 15 May and the ladies will also conduct a similar competition commencing on Tuesday 19 May.
The club recently conducted its AGM with President Ray Brown, Vice President’s Pat Carlin and Bryan Walker, Secretary Rex Alexander, Treasurer Mary Crynes, George Crynes, Jill Roissetter, Lindsay Wealands and Julie Walker taking their positions on the revamped Committee of Management.
Welcomes go to new members; Darren Brown (transferring from Linton), John Dale (transferring from Cardinia Waters) and two of our Monday evening bowlers, Laurie Bell and Keith Hance.
