Berwick College has plunged into mourning after the sudden death of a teacher during classroom activities on Thursday afternoon.

The Department of Education confirmed the tragic incident, citing it as a medical episode.

Paramedics were called to the Manuka Road school after reports of a man’s death.

Upon arrival, a 60-year-old staff member was located deceased.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police said that while exact circumstances are yet to be established, it is not being treated as suspicious.

In a letter to parents, principal Kerri Bolch said the teacher’s tragic passing had rocked the school community.”It is with sadness that I write to inform you of the death of a much loved staff member,” she said.”We have passed on our condolences to the family and will do all we can to support them.

She said a range of support services and counselling would be provided to students, if they require it.

“Please be assured that every effort will be made to support your child at school,” Ms Bolch said.”Teachers, wellbeing team and Department of Education counsellors are available at the school to talk with yourself or any students that need additional support.”

The Gazette has chosen not to name the teacher until all family members have been notifed.
