GARFIELD GOLF

Winter hit the Garfield Golf Club with a bang last week with the temperature hovering around the 12 to 15-degree mark…however it felt like it was single figures all week.

Speaking of single figures (how’s that for a segue) one of Garfield’s more consistent players in Gary Bassett had a week to remember with a great round of 42 points last Sunday week which meant he played to a mark of just four…some six shots to the good of his official rating.

Bassett then came out on Saturday, now playing off nine, and finished runners up for the A Grade event with a handicap score of 36 points, just two points behind Craig Hunter in first place.

Another good size field of 135 players lined up on Saturday with Daniel Blake having a ripper of a round with the D Grade winning score of 43 points.

Graeme Durran, a new name to Garfield, won the C Grade event with a round of 39 points, while Greg Noonan broke a run of outs with the B Grade winning score of 36 points.

A final score of 33 points down to a count back was required to finish in the money.

A total of 13 birdies were scored the day on the par threes with the 14th and 16th giving up four each. Nick Gray scored the two nearest the pins for his round.

Thursday’s game of stableford attracted a field of 78, now becoming the norm, with Bob Calderara continuing on with his good form by getting the A Grade win with a better than handicap round of 38 points.

Bob defeated Andrew Hale, another in-form player, via a count back decision.

Calderara won last Thursday’s event also with a round of 38 points, whilst Hale has had a couple of good results with rounds of 34 and 38 points recently.

Best in for Thursday’s B Grade result was Leo De Jager with a score of 37 points to get the count back decision from Jim Accettura.

The 84-year-old veteran Geoff Roberts won the C Grade event with a handicap beating round of 37 points.

Deirdre Pilkington, becoming a Thursday regular, also scored a handicap round of 36 points.

A final score of 34 points or better was the number to get a ball down the line.

A huge dump of rain meant that Monday’s event was a washout and provided preferred lies for the rest of the week.

Congratulations to a new lady member, Daphne Ellerman, who finished runner up last week then came out on Tuesday to get her first ever club victory.

Daphne scored 34 points to defeat the irrepressible Karli Van Der Horst as well as getting the three nearest the pins.

Next Saturday is the July Monthly Medal.
