SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S

REVIEW – ROUND 3

DIVISION 1

A fired-up Cranbourne travelled to North Port Oval on Saturday, defeating Port Melbourne comfortably, 7.5 (47) to 0.2 (2).

The Eagles dominated from start to finish, but saved their best to last, kicking five second-half goals to gain some vital percentage.

Leah Olsen, Tahlia Fellows (two goals) and Claire Burgess were the best for the Eagles.

Beaconsfield, meanwhile, went down to Bass Coast at Holm Park under lights, 4.4 (28) to 1.3 (9).

DIVISION 2

A fast-starting Cranbourne held off a brave surge from Tyabb at Bunguyan Reserve, 3.6 (24) to 2.4 (16).

The Eagles kicked away in the first term, scoring 3.4 (22) to 0.0 (0), but the Yabbies fought back admirably to narrow the margin to just eight at the final siren.

Janet Sullivan was best afield for the Cranbourne girls.

In other games, Pearcedale went down to Hastings away, 7.0 (42) to 5.4 (34).

DIVISION 3

Pakenham has continued its perfect start to the South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) Division Three competition with an 82-point victory over Mornington at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday, 12.16 (88) to 1.0 (6).

The Lions were expecting a tough contest against the Bulldogs after both teams were engaged in similar battles with Karingal over the previous fortnight.

But the Lions produced some exceptional team football from the opening bounce.

Bel McGee was once again an influential figure in the ruck, providing midfielders Rachel Betteridge, Lauren Hojnacki and Rosie Bureta with first use of the ball. Key forward targets in Rosie Davis and Sage Hahn were in fine form early, with Renee Carter, Sophie Gray and Danielle Case dangerous at their feet.

The Lions led 5.3 to no score at quarter time, and upped the pressure even further in the second term.

Ros Cook and Chloe Nagel had control of the wings, while Mimi Henderson, Zoe Loudon, Mel Stocker, Nat Staunton and Courtney Dodson allowed nothing to get through in defence. The Lions led 10.9 to no score at half time.

Mornington fought the game out tenaciously in the second half, but the efforts of Chloe Bluhm, Bec Domotor, Beth Studd, Tash Wakenshaw, Hayley Denboer and Alice Vonic ensured the Lions would run out convincing winners.

Davis ended the night with five goals for the Lions, and Hahn four, while Carter, Bluhm and Gray played their part in the scoring duties. The Lions celebrated with a delicious serving of Brooke’s Brownies, with coach Tom Bluhm delighted with his team’s efforts.

The competition now takes a one-week hiatus, with SEWF taking on the Southern Football Netball League in an Interleague contest at RSEA Safety Park, Moorabbin, this Sunday May 19 at 12 noon.

The Lions resume their season with an away game against Cerberus/Crib Point on Saturday 25 May, at 10am.

Officer had the bye.
