The Baking Association of Australia have proven Kooweerup’s local tradies have got keen tastebuds, awarding two of local cafe Tradie Kaf’s pies with awards in Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition.

Held from Tuesday 18 June to Thursday 20 June, Tradie Kaf owner Nicole Ellen and her husband Brad Lovitt took home a silver medal for their Slow Cooked Lamb and Rosemary Pie and a bronze medal for their Creamy Roast Chicken, Celery and Carrot pie.

Mrs Ellen said she only had time to enter two pies after receiving suggestions from a number of customers to enter her pies in the competition.

“It’s something I didn’t expect,“ she said.

“It’s great that people are coming by just for the pies.“

Mrs Ellen said ’pie hunter’ groups from Facebook and families from as far as Lakes Entrance and Kyneton had travelled to Kooweerup for a taste of her pies.

“It’s a great community,“ she said.
