GARFIELD GOLF

On Thursday golfers were greeted with very fine and mild conditions for this time of the year with a great size field of 100 turning out for a game of single par.

Scoring proved to be difficult however with just 11 players beating their handicap for the day.

David Keysers provided the day’s highlight by holing out on the par three eighth, while he also scored a nearest the pin on the 13th.

Best in for the day and winning the C Grade event was Ron Parsons with a score of +5, two shots better than the B Grade winner David Thorp, breaking a very long run of outs.

Ray James, playing off his low mark of just seven, was victorious for the A Grade event with a score of +1.

A final score of -2 to a countback was the number to finish in the money.

Tym Davey birdied both the 8th and 9th holes while Lloyd Martin birdied both the 9th and 11th holes during his round.

The other talking point of the week was the narrow victory by Chris Thorn over Tym Davey for the Graeme Ovens Match Play event which went right to the wire with Thorn winning on the 19th.

On the way to the final Thorn took down two of the club’s better golfers in Steve Kohut Jnr 4/3 then Clint Williams 6/4 whilst Davey defeated Ian Hopper 3/2 then defeated a past club champion in Shane Male.

Thorn had an exceptionally good week by also scoring an eagle-three on the par-five tenth on Thursday and also repeating this feat on the 17th on Monday.

On Saturday the forecast cold and wet conditions duly arrived mid morning and kept up all day for the day’s event of single stableford.

Thus, a far less than normal size field of 76 took part.

Best in for the day and winning the A Grade event was Andre Van Gent with a nice score of 40 points, just one point to the better of Andrew Harry.

Graeme Durran took out the B Grade event on a countback from John Hoare with a round of 38 points.

A final score of 32 points was needed to finish in the money and was achieved by a total of 20 players.

John Blair scored a pair of nearest the pins on the 8th and 9th holes.

On Monday a field of 59 took part where Ross McKenzie absolutely blew the field away with the best score in a number of months.

McKenzie played some 10 shots better than his handicap of 16 to win the A Grade event with a score of 46 points…if you don’t mind umpire!

Nigel Goldsworthy broke a run of outs to get the B Grade win with a score of 39 points.

A final countback round of 34 points rewarded those players with a down the line result.

This Saturday is the playing of the July Monthly Medal.
