Memories and music filled St Patrick’s Parish last week to mourn the passing of community stalwart Leonie McGinley.

The requiem mass was held on Wednesday 29 May to attendees from near and far who gathered to honour the late McGinley.

The day was filled with music and singing, a deep passion in McGinley’s life. Attendees entering the parish were first greeted to a band performance by Kooweerup Secondary College led by former music coordinator and friend Claudia Barker OAM.

Father Janeesh – who knew McGinley very well from her work at the parish – led the service.

“May the good Lord welcome her to the heavenly abode,” Father Janeesh said.

“She was a great musician, pianist, teacher, an amazing person with a big heart who welcomed everyone into her life with joy and a smile.”

McGinley’s niece Mary Ingram spoke of her auntie’s life from her love of teaching, history, church and music, and how it inspired all around her.

“She was the sun shining on the trees, without even trying she inspired me,” she said.

“She drew you towards her and guided you just by shining a light on you. I think many of the people in this room would of experienced that in knowing her as a teacher, a leader, a friend or a sister.”

John Fanchette spoke of how integral McGinley was to the parish and how she ‘knew how to bring out the best in us’.

“Leonie’s hands not only graced the piano keys every Saturday evening at the 6pm mass, but also led our choir with strength and passion,” he said

“Her warm smile, generosity and boundless kindness made her a beloved figure in the St Patrick’s Parish.

“With each note played, Leonie brought music into our lives. Teaching us that melodies could comfort, inspire and elevate our souls.”

The requiem mass continued with prayer from members of the parish led by Father Janeesh.

“Leonie has finished her earthly journey, but her music and her spirit will echo in our lives forever,” Father Janeesh said.

After the mass, a procession moved to Cheltenham Memorial Park where Leonie McGinley was buried.
