Protect your plates from thieves

Cardinia police are urging vehicle owners to be vigilant as number plate thefts continue to become more prominent.

Having number plates stolen can not only be a source of inconvenience in having to get new plates issued, but it can also lead to further headaches where your stolen plates can be used for further offences, such as petrol theft and other serious crimes.

To assist with preventing number plate thefts, Pakenham police will be supplying anti-theft screws at the Pakenham Police Station until further notice.

“During the month of April 2024, theft of number plates in Cardinia accounted for 60 per cent of all reported incidents of theft from motor vehicles,” Acting Senior Sergeant Luke Shore said.

“Additionally three incidents of attempted theft from motor vehicle were reported to us whereby offenders were unsuccessful in removing number plates because anti-theft screws were fitted.

“We’ve ordered a quantity of anti-theft screws to provide to members of Cardinia community free of charge to deter would-be offenders, and prevent community members from the significant inconveniences associated with number plate theft.

“The anti-theft screws are effective, easy to fit, and available at no charge at the Pakenham Police Station and I strongly encourage vehicle owners to drop in, say g’day, and get their anti theft screws.”

Police will also be having a safe plate day in the not-too-distant future.
