Victoria’s Big Build project has reached Clyde Road’s first milestone recently as crews started nightworks to relocate and protect essential underground services.

As part of the early works on the project to protect the gas pipeline, a team of specialist crews must cut and remove pieces of the road using a cutting machine and excavator.

Following these works, a new concrete protection slab will be poured to provide long lasting protection prior to major works starting.

Protection of the pipeline and relocation of underground services is needed to make room for the new lanes and shared walking and cycling path along Clyde Road.

This transmission pipeline delivers critical supply across south eastern Melbourne, connecting a network of facilities in the area, including to the nearby substation on the corner of Clyde Road and Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard.

Works to relocate water services along a section of Kangan Drive are scheduled to start later this month (April).

The Clyde Road Upgrade project aims to relieve bottlenecks for residents, commuters and users of nearby health and educational institutions including Monash Health – Casey Hospital, St John of God Hospital, Federation University and Chisholm Institute.

The works will add additional lanes on Clyde Road between the Princes Freeway and Kangan Drive, upgrade both freeway intersections and the Kangan Drive and Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard intersection, as well as widening the existing freeway bridge.

The upgrade also will build and upgrade 1.2 kilometres of shared walking and cycling paths to provide more safe travel options, and install new street lighting, road signage, drainage and landscaping.

The upgrade will be completed in two stages – utility relocation (February to late 2024) – and major works (late 2024 to late 2027).
