Construction will soon start on a new community centre at Cannibal Creek Reserve in Garfield North, after the council authorised a builder for the project.

More Building Group will take on the $2.3 million project as the motion granting the tender was passed unanimously at a recent Cardinia Shire Council meeting.

The project will be a modular build situated within the 25 acres of Cannibal Creek Reserve.

The final construction will provide a social room for events of up to 100 people, as well as a kitchen and meeting room for the local community.

Speaking in favour of the motion, councillor for Bunyip Ward, Graeme Moore was excited for his constituents to have this project soon underway.

“This is great news for the community – this appointment of a builder so a new community centre can be constructed at the Garfield North Cannibal Creek reserve,” he said.

“It’s been a while in the making and it’s fantastic to see the builder here, if agreed to this evening, has been approved for construction.”

Funding is split between the council and the State Government, with $1.003 million coming from the shire and $1.3 million provided by the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

“We thank the Victorian Government for that Growing Suburbs Fund because without that, any of these buildings, this sort of arrangement would not happen in our community,” Cr Moore said.

“I congratulate the builder called More Building Group, now I gotta say there is no conflict of interest here, it’s More Building Group, not the Graeme Moore Building Group.”

The project is currently scheduled for completion by June 2024.
