The serene atmosphere at the Garfield Pool pleases locals who enjoy having a cheap nearby pool to relax and cool off.

The alert lifeguards, shade and ease of access are also a highlight for pool users

“It’s got an old-style, country characteristic atmosphere about it,” Dandenong resident, Kevin, told the Gazette.

Each of Cardinia Shire’s four outdoor pools has individual charm: Emerald Lake Wading Pool, Pakenham Outdoor Pool, Garfield Outdoor Swimming Pool (pictured), Kooweerup Swimming Pool.

The pools are open from November to April on days over 26 degrees.

Grandmother, Lex, visits frequently with her family, including 17-year-old grandson, Oscar, who has autism, and is appeased by the welcoming nature of the settings.

“It’s great that there’s no sort of discrimination against kids like Oscar,” Lex said.

A Cardinia Shire spokesperson emphasised the priority of water safety amid the Covid-19 pandemic which has forced certain pools to close temporarily due to staff shortages.

“Council will continue to work with Aligned Leisure to do all we can to keep the pools open, while always prioritising the health and safety of our community members and employees,“ a Cardinia Shire Spokesperson said.
