Q and A with St Francis Xavier’s VCE dux, Alyanna Trajano

St Francis Xavier's VCE dux - Alyanna Trajano, received a score of 99.45

How are you feeling about being named the College dux?

“I honestly feel like I’m dreaming, I feel so blessed.

“My goal from the beginning was simple – to reach the end of year 12 knowing that I did all that I can, to do the best that I can, as well as giving myself as many options for tertiary study as possible.

“Having achieved that goal and also now becoming the College dux is the biggest gift and I just feel so happy.“

How were you and your family feeling the morning you received your results?

“We are all just feeling very happy and so grateful.

“I opened my results with my parents and it was actually my dad who I asked to look at it first.

“He screamed and cheered once he saw it and when I looked at it we all were just overcome with emotion.

“They have been so supportive of me through it all and I constantly find myself wondering how I got so blessed to have them as my parents.

“I am so thankful for them and I was glad that I was able to share that moment with them.“

What was your study routine?

“My study routine was quite flexible.

“I felt that keeping a rigid schedule would add to the already intense experience of VCE so every day looked different.

“Although, it usually consisted of revisiting content from class and doing wider reading then doing practice questions as soon as I felt confident with the content.

“One thing that was key to my study routine was taking advantage of all of the resources I was provided and visiting materials beyond what was used in class in my own study time.“

How was remote learning?

“It was tough that’s for sure, but at the same time I was lucky that my style of studying adapted easily to the different learning environment we faced during the lockdown period.

“Making weekly schedules and being in constant communication with my teachers were helpful during this time.

“What I struggled with most was probably the lack of social interaction with my friends as having that balance in a classroom was so important to me.

“Luckily we live in a world of technology now so my friends and I could still be in contact, albeit through a screen.“

Are you looking to study and if so, what Uni are you considering?

“I’m currently considering either Monash University or The University of Melbourne.

“I’m still considering a few courses in the science/engineering field so the next few days will definitely involve some decision making.“

Do you have any words of wisdom for the Class of Year 12, 2022?

“Throughout my whole high school journey, all I’ve tried to do is my best so I’d give the same advice – just do your best, in any way that you can.

“As cliché as it sounds, the fulfilment of knowing that you gave it your all is second to none.

“Given the last few years, I’d also advise them to make the most out of every opportunity and remind them of the beauty of change.

“The transition period that occurs during Year 12 and after it can be daunting, but embrace every moment of it because some of the best moments of your life are happening within it.“

How did your school’s learning environment help you excel?

“For me, the teaching staff really made the difference.

“I was lucky enough to have had amazing teachers over the years who were willing to go above and beyond to help me become not only a better learner but more importantly a better person.

“Being able to build these positive relationships with them enabled me to comfortably ask for help and truly feel like they wanted the best for me.

“Beyond this, the college provided me with such incredible opportunities outside the classroom, having had the opportunity to be involved in leadership as the College Captain and in other extracurricular activities that helped me become a well-rounded learner.“
