Q and A with St Francis Xavier’s VCAL Student of the Year, Tara O’Sullivan

St Francis Xavier's VCAL Student of the Year – Tara O’Sullivan.

How are you feeling about being the college VCAL Student of the Year?

“I am feeling very honoured and grateful to be the recipient of the VCAL Student of the Year!

“It is wonderful to know that all of my hard work and dedication has resulted in me receiving this award.“

What was your study routine throughout the year?

“My study routine consisted of completing all my work when it was assigned to me.

“During remote learning, as soon as I would receive my weekly work I would ensure that I had it completed as soon as possible.

“I didn’t procrastinate doing my work, I just did it to ensure I was all up to date and would never fall behind.“

How did you handle remote learning with school /TAFE being closed?

“I really enjoyed remote learning and felt that my work and my motivation improved whilst being at home.

“I am an independent learner and enjoyed being able to complete my work in my own time and with no interruptions.“

What TAFE did you attend?

“I attended TAFE Gippsland in Warragul where I studied and completed my Certificate II in Animal Studies.“

How did you find VCAL, and in your opinion, what is the best part of VCAL?

“I found VCAL to be an amazing pathway with its number one goal [being] to give students a direct pathway into their future career.

“VCAL allowed me to complete my certificate which has given me a head start on my career in the animal industry.“

What’s next for you/ what is your career path?

“As I have completed my prerequisite certificate, I am now going to study a four week course in pet grooming in February.

“Once this course is finished I will be a qualified pet groomer.

“After a couple years working for someone in their business, I would love to start my own mobile business.“

What would you like to say to any student looking for a VCAL pathway?

“I would like to tell anyone who is looking to study VCAL that if there is a pathway that you are interested in, do it!

“It will give you so many amazing opportunities whilst also giving you the chance to study a TAFE course whilst still being in school.

“There are many views on VCAL as compared to VCE but if you believe that the VCAL pathway is what’s best for you and your career, follow that and don’t listen to others who try to change your mind!“

How did your school support you achieving your goals?

“St Francis Xavier College supported me throughout the years by ensuring I had teachers, fellow peers and other staff members who cared about me and my goals.

“My teachers allowed me to complete my work how I knew was best.

“They were there for me when I needed but also gave me independence with my work which I really appreciated!“
