Lockdown extended for Melbourne

Melbourne’s lockdown has been extended by seven days while regional Victoria is reprieved from restrictions from 11.59pm Thursday 3 June.

For metropolitan Melbourne, which includes Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong Shires, there will still be only five reasons to leave home: shopping for food and supplies, authorised work and study, care and caregiving, exercise, and getting vaccinated.

However, people will be able to travel further for exercise and shopping, with an expanded 10km radius.

Students in Year 11 and 12 will return to face-to-face learning, including students in other year levels who are doing a Unit 3/4 VCE or VCAL subject, while that class is being taught.

A number of outdoor jobs will be added to the authorised list – things like landscaping, painting, installing solar panels, or letterboxing.

Other restrictions – including mask wearing – will stay the same.

Acting Premier James Merlino said he hoped by the end of another seven days, the government would be able to ease restrictions for Melbourne.

“But I need to be upfront that even if all goes well, we won’t be able to have people from Melbourne travelling to regional Victoria over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend,” he said.

“The risk of exporting the virus is just too high.”

For regional Victorians, if there are still no community transmissions by tomorrow, the relaxation of some restrictions will go ahead.

That includes lifting the travel and reasons to leave home restrictions, upping public gatherings to 10 people and schools back to face-to-face learning.

Masks will still need to be worn inside and visitors to your home still banned.
