An erratic driver who nearly struck several pedestrians in Pakenham allegedly travelled down a bicycle path to flee police.

Members from the Public Order Response Team were alerted to a white Commodore Ute which was allegedly seen driving “erratically” in the Eagle Drive area on Monday 5 October.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, which had shredded tyres and was driving on its rims, but due to the speed of the Ute, police were unable to bring it to a stop.

The driver is alleged to have then mounted a footpath, travelled down an embankment and onto a bicycle path in a bid to ditch police.

According to a statement from Cardinia Eyewatch, police allege the Ute nearly struck several pedestrians while on the bicycle path.

The driver and his passenger allegedly dumped the vehicle along the bike path before removing the plates and throwing them into a nearby creek.

Both men were eventually arrested by police.

The driver has since been charged with several driving offences, possessing a drug of dependence and breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directives.

He was released on bail and is due to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates Court at a later date.
