A Pakenham trio – who claimed to be “unaware” of Covid restrictions – have been nabbed by police as they attempted to travel to Melton.

Victoria Police say they caught three people on Wednesday 22 July – who said they were on their way to a mate’s place – despite their friend living on the other side of the city, more than 80 kilometres away.

The driver’s comical excuse – not knowing about the widely publicised restrictions – wasn’t enough to win over officers, who slapped the driver and both passengers with a fine.

Meanwhile, five people who were gathering in a Cranbourne park drinking alcohol were also issued with an infringement.

A total of 47 fines were handed out to individuals found to be breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directions.

Three of the fines came out of checks to 22,890 vehicles at various checkpoints across the state.

More than 4500 spot checks were also conducted at homes, businesses and public places across the state.

People living in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire can only leave home for four reasons – shopping for food and supplies, care and caregiving, exercise, and study and work, if you can’t do it from home.
