A 19-year-old man has been taken into police custody following a house fire in Pakenham.

Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a property on Hartland Circuit in Lakeside on Wednesday 26 February about 8pm.

Five CFA vehicles from Pakenham and Toomuc attended the scene and extinguished the fire by about 8.10pm.

It’s understood Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also notified.

Detective sergeant Frank Van Doeselaar from the Dandenong family violence unit said the property had received “considerable damage”.

“I wouldn’t say the damage is significant but it’s certainly considerable,” he said.

“We understand there is considerable damage to two rooms of the house and some further smoke damage throughout.”

The 19-year-old Pakenham man, who is believed to be known to the victim, was arrested.

He remains in police custody where he’s said to be “assisting officers with their enquiries”.

He is yet to be interviewed and a motive is not yet known.
