One of Europe’s leading supermarket chains have announced they intend on bringing a store to Pakenham.

Kaufland, one of the world’s largest retails, has already chosen Victoria as the starting ground for its Australian expansion.

The German giant is currently building its 115,000 square metre distribution centre in Mickleham, with three approved stores set for construction in Dandenong, Epping and Chirnside Park.

Minister for Economic Development Tim Pallas announced the go-ahead for two stores in Coolaroo and Oakleigh South, with nine additional stores across Victoria, including Pakenham and Narre Warren.

The state government has referred the proposals to an independent advisor panel for consideration.

“This is great news for consumers – another major player in the market will provide more choice for Victorians, more value for money at the checkout and create thousands of jobs,” Mr Pallas said.

The construction industry is set to also reap the rewards, with each store built creating hundreds of opportunities for local construction businesses, workers and apprentices.

Kaufland’s investment in Victoria is worth $435 million and is expected to create 15000 jobs but those figures will rise, if the nine proposed stores are built.

“With five approved stores, as well as the additional nine sites under review, we are committed to our long term, sustainable growth across Victoria,” Kaufland Australia managing director Julia Kern said.

“We look forward to creating thousands of jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses.”
