Footy fans are being urged to take public transport to the AFL Grand Final on Saturday to ease the pressure on roads around the MCG.
VicRoads Acting Chief Executive Peter Todd said Tigers and Crows fans, or those who are just there to enjoy the game, should take public transport to the match.
“There are so many options for getting to the events this weekend, so leave the car at home and take a tram, train or bus to the celebration sites,” he said.
Drivers should be aware that a number of roads will be closed on Friday 29 September to accommodate the more than 60,000 fans who are expected for the Grand Final Parade.
The closures will be in place from 7am to 3pm along the parade route and many surrounding streets.
Standard game day road closures will be in place on Grand Final Day around the Melbourne Cricket Ground, including Brunton Avenue and Jolimont Road.
There will also be lane closures on Punt Road northbound turning left into Brunton Avenue and the turning lanes from Wellington Parade into Jolimont Road.
The speed will be reduced to 40km/h on Punt Road in both directions between CityLink and Bridge Road before and after the game, to assist pedestrians to safely travel to and from the precinct.
“On Sunday we’re expecting a healthy turnout at the MCG Open Day as well as the Richmond faithful cheering on the boys at Punt Road Oval,” Mr Todd said.
“If you’re travelling through the area across the weekend, please plan your journey and consider using an alternative route.”
