A woman who was caught smoking a cigarette with two young children in her vehicle, told police she didn’t know it was an offence.
Members of Pakenham Police said they could not believe their eyes when they observed a 49-year-old woman from Pakenham smoking as she travelled along the Old Princes Highway in Beaconsfield on Tuesday, 2 May.
The woman was intercepted by police and questioned. She claimed she didn’t know that smoking in the car while transporting children was an offence.
She was issued with an infringement notice for $311 and educated on the dangers of smoking with children in the vehicle.
Police said that the incident serves as a reminder to all road users that it is an offence to smoke while any person under the age of 18 is present in the vehicle.
