Light market raises prices

Baw Baw Livestock Exchange market report for 11 and 12 January 2017.
Wednesday fat sale – 373 head, Thursday cow sale – 71 bulls and 313 cows.
There was a lighter than expected yarding of 373 head last week, the same as the previous week, for the fat sale.
Prices were up on the previous sale for most categories.
Heifer and steer numbers still remain on the lighter side with condition being very good, and vealers sold stronger.
The week’s yard average remained firm on the previous sale at 320 cents per kilo.
A total of 34 heifers made to 330 cents, up five cents, 25 steers made to 339 cents, up nine cents, and averaged 304.2 cents, up 20 cents, and 298 veal made to 379 cents, up nine cents, and averaged 334.3 cents, up four cents.
On the Thursday the bull and cow sale saw good competition which forced prices upward.
Seventy one bulls topped at 314.6 cents, up 22 cents and averaged 258.1 cents.
There were 313 cows yarded with the top selling to 300.2 cents, which was 21 cents better, and averaging the same as last week at 222.4 cents, with the yard average four cents up at 230.4 cents.
