ARSON chemists are currently investigating whether a house fire in Kooweerup was suspicious.
The Charles Street home in Kooweerup will need to be bulldozed as a result of the fire which ripped through the home from about 1pm on Saturday 24 September.
It had recently been sold to new owners.
Police were told the current owners had left for a weekend away when they received a call alerting them to the large-scale fire.
CFA had to issue an urgent warning to those in the immediate area to steer clear, explaining it would take them hours to extinguish any hot spots still burning within the home.
The street was closed off as firefighters battled the fire.
Police said arson chemists had been to the fire-damaged home, and currently believed the blaze originated in the lounge room.
They are yet to confirm if the fire was suspicious or accidental.
Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Darren Hedge said the damage caused was “extensive” and that the home would need to be bulldozed.
The investigation is ongoing.
