GIPPSLAND SOCCER LEAGUE – ROUND 2
THE Eagles have landed on the GSL winner’s list.
After a tough opening clash against Leongatha Knights, falling 2-4 in its debut with only 10 available senior players and many Eagles backing up from the reserves’ game, Lang Lang United brushed aside Mirboo North United with a two-goal margin to celebrate the senior men’s first triumph.
Henry Pace Bonello (19’) smacked in the first, his second goal in as many weeks, to give the Eagles the lead at the half.
Nothing Mirboo North mustered was enough to breach the Lang Lang fortifications and the last nail in the coffin was struck by Mason Schoenberger-Smith (78’) approaching the final whistle with the side taking a 2-0 win.
Coach Grant Spence said it was fantastic to get the win, but the Eagles still need a theme song to get the celebrations going properly.
“It was great – we don’t have a song unfortunately yet, so we’ve got a work in progress and a bit of a competition for someone who creates the best one gets something from the club,” Spence said. “It wasn’t the prettiest of all wins and against a hard opponent, but a solid effort from the team and we grounded out the victory in the end.”
The win pushes Lang Lang United to fourth on the GSL South senior men’s ladder – trailing Inverloch Stars, Phillip Island and Drouin Dragons.
The Eagles’ have starred throughout the grades to keep the good times going down the South Gippsland Highway.
“Seven to one was a great result for them – the women’s team is doing really well,” Spence said. “All our teams won this week which was really good.”
But the winning ways will have to take a week off as Lang Lang has a bye, before its round 4 clash with local rivals Drouin Dragons at Bellbird Park.
In FFV results, Pakenham United earned its first full batch of points … with a forfeit from Parkmore SC. The Cougars battle Baxter on Saturday afternoon at home.
Bunyip Strikers are on top of the pops in Metropolitan League 5 South-East with a 4-0 trouncing of Riversdale SC. With four more added to its 4-2 victory last week, the Strikers sit on top of the table before its clash with Old Xaverians SC Thirds on Sunday at home.
