COUNCIL has awarded contracts for safety upgrades at two local black-spot intersections, with work expected to be complete by the end of April.
The two intersections to be upgraded are at Caldermeade and Heads roads in Catani and at Dalmore and Manks roads in Kooweerup.
Both will be converted into a ‘staggered T’ configuration, meaning cars will be forced to stop.
At Monday night’s council meeting, the contracts were awarded to the tenders evaluated as the best value for money.
Port Ward councillor David Young welcomed the upgrades but said the funding had come too late.
“The intersections are notorious within the local district, for there have been a number of accidents or near-misses,” he said.
“It has been a long process and it’s really disappointing that to be eligible for black spot funding there has to be a number of incidents at the corner.”
Council’s general manager of Assets and Services Michael Ellis said it was hoped that works on both intersections would be complete by the end of April.
The contracts were given to All-Waste Solutions for the Dalmore/Manks intersection at $243,680.70, and Fulton Hogan Industries for the Caldermeade/Heads intersection at $227,156.89.
Federal Black Spot funding is directed at road locations identified as high-risk for road accidents. In February 2014, four members of the same family were killed after a truck driver failed to stop at the intersection of Caldermeade and Heads roads.
