Demand continues to boost prices

SIMILAR numbers for the Wednesday fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange last week saw the continuation of increased demand and better prices.
Bullock weights were similar to last week but one extra buyer present lifted the average for this category.
Extra heifers were yarded and demand lifted, quality was improved giving heifers the best average increase on the day and lighter steers on average resulted in the price per head average dipping.
However, the heavier processor pens saw prices lift to above the 300 cents mark and the lighter pens saw increased bidding from several restockers present.
Vealers remained firm on the last sale with very little change in demand and a larger number of better quality pens saw prices above the 300 cent mark continue for a bigger percentage of the pens.
The yard average this week was firm at 275 cents.
Twenty-six bullocks made to 286 cents firm and averaged 273.6 cents, up seven cents.
Forty-eight heifers made to 295 cents, up 15 cents, and averaged 252.4 cents, up 12 cents.
Thirty-seven steers made to 304.6 cents, up 16 cents, and averaged 223.1 cents firm.
A total of 395 veal made to 326.6 cents firm and averaged 284.9 cents, up two cents.
With the return of one buyer absent recent weeks, the Thursday sale saw improvements for all categories.
This lifted the yard average eight 8 cents to 195.6 cents.
Twenty-nine bulls reached 268.6 cents to average 15 cents up at 219.1 cents.
Sixteen bullocks made to 270 cents to average 232.3 cents and 546 cows topped at 270.6 cents, up 22 cents on last week and the cow average was seven cents better at 192.8 cents.
The draw for 17 and 18 February is: 1, Gibbon; 2, Scotts; 3, Landmark; 4, Elders; 5, SEJ.
