Never crossed his mind

FEDERAL McMillan MP Russell Broadbent will begin his run to keep his seat ahead of the next election without any competition from his Liberal colleagues.
Mr Broadbent’s office confirmed yesterday he would be the only Liberal candidate for pre-selection.
Mr Broadbent, who first ran at a federal level in 1984 and first held the seat of McMillan in 1996, told the Gazette last month he was motivated as ever to remain in federal politics.
“Absolutely… it’s (retirement) not even crossing my mind,” he said.
Meanwhile there have been several nominations for the Upper House seat of Eastern Victoria following the departure of Danny O’Brien.
Mr O’Brien formally resigned from the Legislative Council last month to devote time and energy into his campaign for the Legislative Assembly seat of Gippsland South.
A National Party spokeswoman said the seat had already received one nomination but would not reveal the identity of the candidate.
“We’ve had one nomination so far from the East Gippsland region but I am expecting a few more,” she said.
Nominations close for the position at 3pm on Friday.
