QUILTS sewn by the 2Cs Sew and Chat Group have been sent as far as Alice Springs.
Yvonne Stephenson from the group said the members had been meeting for about four years.
“We all like doing things for people that are less fortunate than ourselves,” she said.
“When you have a major illness it keeps you going and it’s a social thing too.”
There are about 10 women in the group who have sewn and crocheted items for various community organisations and hospitals.
They have donated items to the Monash Medical Centre, the Dandenong Hospital and nursing homes across the region.
“We give to the Uniting Church in Berwick that work for disabled people and they have also sent some of the quilts to the Northern Territory,” Yvonne said.
“They are given to the nursing homes when it gets cold over there.”
One of the women comes to the monthly meeting all the way from Churchill.
“She still comes back once a month, and two of the ladies up there sit with her and knit squares, ” Yvonne said.
“They are given to people who are less fortunate.”
There’s another sewer in Meadowvale Retirement Village who also helps out by knitting most of the group’s baby wear.
“The ladies get a real kick out of it,” she said.
Yvonne has been sewing for about 30 years and said there had been a resurgence of interest in patchwork.
“I sewed right from the time I was a teenager,” she said.
“Patchwork did die out from time to time but it’s come back again and is going from strength to strength.
“To me when I first started it was relaxing.”
Recently, the group presented the Officer Specialist School with some wall hangings and quilts for the students.
The group donated the quilts to help brighten up their rooms for the 66 students with special needs that attend the school.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month to help make quilts for those who are less fortunate.
All of the material has been donated.
The members put in a gold coin donation each month to purchase the wadding.
