Wenn takes the reins

NEW Berwick Show president Peter Wenn has a busy year ahead.
Mr Wenn, promoted from his role as senior vice-president at the show’s annual general meeting on Thursday, plans to investigate the show’s finances, form a new committee for entertainment and promotions, and attend at least one meeting of every sub-committee – all while preparing for his November wedding.
“We will be looking at costs, income and pricings. I also think it is very important we try to be involved in all the sections,” he said.
Retiring president Warwick Glendenning said good weather and the proven family formula – lots of entertainment and little alcohol – had made the 2010 show a success.
“But we’ve not fared too well on the balance sheet – gate fees, trade fees; it is time for serious economic consideration in these areas,” he said. “On a personal note, I would like to thank the executive committee, my wife Kay, and secretary Nikki Terracall. To all those who have contributed, I would like to say thankyou. And to my detractors, feel free to put up your hand to follow on for a very personal honour, being president of the Berwick Show.”
Outgoing treasurer Ross Bradbury was presented with an inscribed clock.
Flowers were also presented to John and Heather Tyrell. John, the driving force behind entertainment and promotions, and Heather, a stalwart of the arts and crafts pavilion, will continue to be involved behind the scenes.
“Heather lives and breathes the arts and crafts and has done a sterling job. With her team, she has presented one of the biggest arts and crafts exhibits outside of Melbourne,” Mr Glendenning said.
“And John – what can you say about John. It’s John’s way or the highway. We might have to employ someone to keep up with what you did. It has been an absolute mammoth task.”
Jack Rae presented an honorary life membership to horseman and cattle steward, Geoff Marriot.
He also urged the society to gather its historical records for safekeeping. Neil Lucas volunteered for the task.
