AT THE June meeting of the Probus Club of Pakenham, the guest speaker was Rowan Higgon from the newsXpress news-agency in Pakenham.
Rowan recently won the Cardinia Shire Business Award.
He purchased the news- agency five years ago and since then has expanded his business by roughly 30 per cent and has done a completely new fit-out which has taken two years to complete.
The business has gone through a lot of changes and he recently bought the newsagency next to Coles in Pakenham Place.
They deliver to over 1000 homes.
The newspaper industry is changing. Unfortunately the price of newspapers has not gone up much, but the overheads have.
There are less newspapers being sold now, and they will gradually decline in the next 10 years due to people reading the paper on the internet and people using their iPads.
The business starts at 1.30am, with a second delivery of papers at 3.30am and then a car does deliveries at 4am.
There are only a handful of newsagencies who have a home delivery man, the oldest one being 70 years old.
Speaker Val Toogood thanked Rowan for a most interesting talk and presented him with a bottle of wine.
The next meeting of the Probus Club of Pakenham, will be held on July 2 at the Pakenham Bowls Club at 10am.
