Market soars on competition and demand

THE best way to describe the sale at VLE Pakenham was dearer, dearer and dearer as all classes of cattle sold very well.
There was more competition and stronger demand for a smaller and generally plainer quality yarding, which saw fewer very good quality vealers penned.
A reasonable percentage of the yarding were showing signs of the hot and steamy weather and processors will get less bang for their buck. Prices were mostly two cents to 10 cents per kilogram dearer.
Of the 600 vealers penned the top quality calves were few, which created stronger demand. There was also extra competition for these calves, which assisted in the top prices ranging between 190 cents and 210 cents per kilogram.
Depending on weight, other very good quality vealers made from 178 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
There were more orders for cattle to feed, and this helped the prices of other vealers and yearlings, aiding prices of 155 cents to 178 cents with some lighter weight B muscle vales to 192 cents per kilogram.
Throughout the penning of 700 yearlings, there were some good to very good quality steers and heifers sold with some big variations in weight as well.
Some supplementary fed yearlings made from 168 cents to 190 cents with most of the grass-fattened steers selling between 155 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
Heifers of similar quality made between 146 cents to 168 cents per kilogram. Plain condition heifers generally sold at unchanged rates with D1 and some D2 heifers making from 124 cents to 148 cents per kilogram.
Approximately 150 grown cattle were penned, and half of these were prime steers and bullocks. Demand was stronger for these with prices ranging from 155 cents to 163 cents, while others made between 137 cents and 150 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers made to 145 cents per kilogram.
