A BERWICK electrician has made it through as one of five state finalists in Australia’s Hottest Tradie competition.
Daniel Maher said he decided to enter the competition, which he describes as a “mini miss universe for tradies,” after hearing it advertised on the radio.
“I thought I’d give it a go,” he said.
“One of the main reasons I signed up was because it sounded like a good opportunity to advertise my Berwick-based business.”
Within 24 hours of signing up, the 29-year-old noticed the votes were flooding in.
“I mentioned it to my family and friends and then they started voting, too,” he said.
“I was shocked and surprised to see the votes tallying up.”
Mr Maher said he wasn’t the typical buffed-up “pretty boy”.
“I think I have the all-round package,” he said.
“Whatever I’m lacking in looks I make up with my charisma and personality.”
Mr Maher is in his 11th year of being an electrician, setting up his own business about a year ago.
“It’s the best trade out there. I believe you should work to live and not live to work. There is no other job I’d rather do or better place to live,” he said.
Lija Jarvis from dating site RSVP, which is running the competition, said the five finalists from Victoria definitely ticked all the boxes in what women had said they loved most about a tradie.
“A strong, fit physique, a cheeky smile, a good Aussie sense of humour and, of course, the added bonus of being able to fix things around the house,” Ms Jarvis said.
Mr Maher was set to find out if he has won the state title yesterday (Tuesday) when he was judged by a panel of women at the New Bay Hotel in Brighton.
He said if he was successful he will then be flying to Sydney to compete in the grand final for the chance to take home the title and a new ute.
