IF they were doing right before now, Pakenham Scouts sure have a reason to pat themselves on the back after being selected as a state benchmark group by visiting international delegates.
On Friday night, the local Scouting group played host to a number of delegates from across the Asia Pacific as part of an idea building workshop.
Joeys through to Rovers from Pakenham’s 120-member strong group turned out for the honourable occasion, showing off the many skills and qualities which rendered them a model group to the 22 international leaders.
Group Leader Jason Baird said hosting the delegates was a heart-warming occasion.
“I am very proud.
“It’s great recognition for our volunteers in the group who provide exemplary service to the Pakenham community and great opportunities for the kids,” he said.
Mr Baird said the Scouting group had wide community involvement, increasing its membership numbers by 20 per cent in the last year and 30 per cent in the previous year.
“A lot of families are seeing the value of getting their kids outdoors, camping, hiking and out about, particularly in a time where there is a lot of technology (keeping kids indoors).”
The local increase in membership trumps the Victoria figures, according to Mr Baird who indicated state-wide membership had increased by approximately one per cent in the same 12-month period.
“It’s all about providing kids the opportunity to learn by doing,” he said, making mention of projects taken on by the local Scouting group including the recent clean-up of a local women’s shelter.
No Scout event would be complete without a camp fire and sure enough, the flames were blazing away at the weekend event held at the Scouting hall.
