Janine Fitzsimmons has a mission to make people smile.

The Officer woman has a natural flair for creating gift hampers, but after a good friend was diagnosed with cancer four years ago, the idea came about to create hampers tailored to those suffering from the hideous disease.

“Cancer is not age or gender specific, it affects so many people and there are so many different forms,” Ms Fitzsimmons said.

Replacing flowers for funny eye masks, the hampers are made up of essential items needed for those facing the toughest times of their life, and are often the things people don’t think to send.

“People show they’re thinking of you and they care but often the things you get sent just aren’t relevant or appropriate,” she said.

“We did quite a lot of research by means of talking to various cancer sufferers about what they want and what they needed.

“I really do think it’s a good idea, these are products they really do need and want, they don’t want to be reminded they’re sick, these are everyday items they’ll use.”

While each hamper differs depending on the person you’re buying for, the items included range from throw rugs, warm socks and wheat bags to cooling towels, face masks and fragrance free hand creams.

You’ll also find Bluetooth beanies, colouring books, travel cups, water bottles and stationary, while the little ones will get a laugh out of spinning pens and stink bombs.

“These are all things which people forget about when they’re sick, they’re essentials and they’re something they’ll get use out of,” she said.

“The hampers are wrapped as presents, because everyone loves a present.”

And for every hamper sold, a donation is put towards cancer research.

But the hampers aren’t just for people suffering from illness. Ms Fitzsimmons has created a range of gift hampers through her online business, Sending Smiles 2 U.

“They’re not just for people with cancer or anyone who is unwell, I’m focusing on just making people smile,” she said.

“I want to be able to do as much as I can for people and help people smile and feel better, those little one percenters that make a difference.”
