The Gemco Players are bringing the 19th century Industrial Revolution to Emerald with their production of Oliver the Musical.
Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, and set in the East End of London, Oliver chronicles the journey of Oliver Twist from foundling in a workhouse to the life of a professional pickpocket on the harsh streets of Victorian London.
Lead by veteran director Kate McManus, musical director and Gemco stalwart Margie Gemmel and choreographed by Tam Dahmen, Gemco Player’s production of Oliver is an ambitious undertaking that will charm and challenge audiences in equal measure.
“There’s a theatre trope that you never work with children or animals,” Kate McManus said laughing.
“But the kids in Oliver are every bit – perhaps even more – professional and talented than the adults – they are absolutely the highlight of the show.”
Oliver’s loveable rogue Fagin is played by Tim O’Leary, the Artful Dodger by Caleb Hope and Oliver himself by Christian Stammer.
The rest of the cast and ensemble is filled out by a talented troupe of children and adults who collectively bring Victorian London to life.
The show must close on Saturday 21 October at The Gem Community Arts Centre, 19 Kilvington Drive, Emerald.
Tickets can be secured through Gemco Player’s website www.gemcoplayers.org or directly through www.trybooking.com.
