There were approximately 220 export and 250 young cattle penned representing an increase of 160 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and operating selectively in a softer market in places.
Quality was generally wintry although there was a limited selection of well finished prime cattle scattered throughout.
Vealer quality declined and prices reflected this.
Yearling trade steers eased five cents to 10 cents while the heifer portion held firm.
Secondary young cattle eased up to 30 cents, grown steers sold dearer for better quality while bullocks sold to firm demand.
Friesian manufacturing steers sold to solid demand while the crossbred portion eased a few cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 320 cents to 347 cents, yearling trade steers made between 288 cents and 310 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold mostly between 278 cents and 306 cents after a top of 323 cents.
Grown steers made from 282 cents to 320 cents, bullocks sold from 288 cents to 308 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made between 260 cents and 276 cents with the crossbred portion between 266 cents and 295 cents.
