LANG Lang’s Jasmine Batrouney has joined the national female-led Unleashed Women movement which aims to end hunger by 2030.
The 20-year-old is one of more than 100 women across Australia who have pledged to raise $1000 before the end of the year for The Hunger Project.
Jasmine plans to document her experiences to inspire five other women to take part in the project and to spread awareness of less fortunate women in other countries.
“The Unleashed Women project will help empower women to not only feed their children and families but to also teach others about how to feed their families,” she said.
“It will help them transform their communities and become self-reliant.
“Every girl who signs up is given a handmade bracelet from India. I feel like it links us together. It’s a reminder that you’re part of something bigger.”
The Lang Lang resident and her university friend, Hiba, plan to hold a trivia night fund-raiser and are currently working to secure a venue.
They have begun approaching local businesses for support.
With the $1000 that each individual woman raises, The Hunger Project is able to train 800 mothers about the importance of a healthy diet to break the cycle of malnutrition that stunts children’s growth and development. That amount of money could also give 60 women a start-up microfinance loan to begin a small business to generate an income.
The Hunger Project is a global non-government organisation that focuses on empowering women and girls living in rural, remote India, Bangladesh, Africa and Latin America.
All women who reach their fundraising target will be invited to the national events in March during the week of International Women’s Day.
