Demons put up a brave fight

KOOWEERUP OVER 60’s

Kooweerup Over 60’s travelled to Warrandyte not short on enthusiasm but short on numbers with only eight players taking on 12 from the home side.

Warrandyte’s captain was not prepared to lend Kooweerup any players to bat, but gave the visitors two players in field meaning Kooweerup would have 10.

Kooweerup captain Graham Davey won the toss and decided to bat first.

Graham Davey and Brett Carey opened the batting and Carey was bowled first ball by Steve Pascoe…not the best of starts.

Andrew Thomas joined Davey and they had a 57-run partnership in 14 overs before Thomas was bowled by Rod Dungan for an excellent 39 runs off 41 balls.

In the next over, with the score the same, Davey 12 (42) was runout.

In the next six overs Kooweerup lost a further three wickets for 16 runs.

Jeff Ramage 4 (3) bowled by Dungan; Wayne Dozzi 5 (4) bowled by Damian Mobila and Ron Wenke 1 (13) brilliantly caught by Bruce Twite off the bowling of Noel Sharpe.

It was now in the 20th over and the score was 6/68 and the last pair was at the crease. Ross Farmer and John Moore produced the second-best partnership of the innings, taking the total to 96 in the 25th over before Farmer 12 (28) was caught by John Smith off the bowling of Andy Paralis.

Moore remained 16 not out off 12 balls. The score was 7/96 at the end of the Kooweerup innings.

The two opening bowlers for Warrandyte bowled their limit of eight overs each before other bowlers were given an over. Steve Pascoe 8-1/31, Rod Dungan 8-2/29, Damien Mobila 2-1/4, Andy Paralis 3-1/8 and Noel Sharpe 4-1/19 all bowled very well.

Twite and Warron opened the batting for Warrandyte and on the third ball of the first over Warron was caught, bowled by Graham Davey. Warron 4 (3) was caught by substitute fielder Mobila.

Twite retired after making a quick 43 runs off 26 balls.

In the ninth over with the score on 76, Pope 20 (28) was stumped by Dozzi off the new bowling sensation, Ron Wernke.

In Wernke’s next over he bowled Pollock 4 (2) and next ball had Barnfield dropped by Ramage. After 14 overs Warrandyte had reached the total of 3 for 97 with Barnfield 9 (8) and Paradis 7 (12) both not out.

A win to Warrandyte by seven wickets.

Kooweerup bowling; Ron Wernke 3-2/29, Graham Davey 4-1/28 Brett Carey 4-0/19, Ross Farmer 2-0/17 and Andrew Thomas 1-0/7.

All the Kooweerup platers involved in this match gave their all and put up a good fight even though they were missing at least five of their best players.

Next Sunday Kooweerup is at home for their last home and away game for the season against East Doncaster.
