Businesses and workers in the Cardinia Shire may benefit from $500,000 that was given to Cardinia Shire Council from the Federal Government.

The council was awarded the large sum to improve community safety and provide and economic boost to local businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said the council will receive the funding to install and/or upgrade of CCTV and electronic access control systems at 10 sites across the shire to improve security and safety.

“Brilliant news for Cardinia Shire Council and the wider community,” she said.

“As we enter into a Covid-normal environment, it’s really important that our communities feel safe.

“This funding is a welcome boost to our local economy when we need it most, so congratulations to all.”

The $500,000 is one of 31 projects sharing in more than $5.6 million in funding under the 2020-21 Community Safety Infrastructure Grants, as part of the government’s $2.7 billion Building Works package.

This project will address identified crime issues and illegitimate usage at multiple sites, improve infrastructure to create a safer environment for the community and increase usage at the sites.

The funding will support small local businesses and provide economic stimulus which will feed back into the community.

“Congratulations to the recipients of the Community Safety Infrastructure Grants, who worked hard to develop innovative projects that keep their communities safe,” Crime Prevention Minister Natalie Hutchins said.

“The government is committed to helping Victorians recover from the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This support will improve safety and boost employment across the state.”

Projects will commence as soon as it is safe to do so, and where possible will engage employees through the Working for Victoria program, which prioritises employment for resident impacted by the pandemic.
