Upwards of 300,000 Australians would usually be gearing up to go camping over the Easter period, and although travel this year is a no-go, there’s no need to cancel the entire camping experience.

With most of the 711,000 registered camper trailers, camper-vans and caravans across the country laying idle right now, the ‘Camp at Home Heroes’ initiative aims to keep the camping spirit alive by camping at home.

The fun, educational, family based and socially responsible alternative to a road trip encourages campers to set up a backyard tent, caravan in the driveway or even a home-made cubby in the living room.

Camping is proven to provide many physical and psychological benefits – and during these challenging times, these benefits are needed more than ever.

Caravan Industry Association of Australia spokesperson Keelan Howard said 95 percent of campers believed that camping reduced stress while 93 percent believed it brought families closer together.

“Remaining positive and trying to continue some normality in our lives is more important than ever in these challenging times,” Mr Howard said.

“Camping offers so many benefits to our health both physically and mentally, and these benefits can still be enjoyed from your own home.”

To get involved, families are encouraged to visit the Let’s Go Caravan and Camping Facebook page for competitions and tips to camp at home and to share videos / images with the tag #holidayathome #campathomeheroes.
